A mom shares her son’s treatment journey to help parents considering alternative medicine for their kids on the spectrum.
My son is 13 years old and has cerebral pal-sy with co-occurring autism spectrum disorder and attention deficit hyperac-tivity disorder (ADHD). Ever since the age of four, he has undergone numerous treatments for his multiple disorders—and he is still undergoing such treatments.
My journey as a parent has been extremely challenging. Among the various treatments we’ve tried, alternative or integrative medicine has been immensely beneficial for my son. I am not a medical expert, but I would like to share my family’s personal experiences of alternative treatments with you.
Alternative medical treatments
Acupuncture
Our family uses homeopathy, acupuncture, and ayurveda. I never gave my son any allopathic drugs, even though they were prescribed by various doctors. Allopathic drugs used for neurological disorders often have long-lasting side effects, especially in children. Acupuncture is a traditional Chinese medicine technique that uses needles to stimulate specific points around the body. The goal is to help your body’s natural healing process kick in. My son was first given acupuncture treatment at the age of four. His gross motor skills and body balance was very poor due to cerebral palsy, and acupuncture led to significant improvement. He is still undergoing acupuncture for improving his posture, balance, and gait.

Homeopathy
When he was very young, about three to four years old, my son used to fall down about six to eight times a day even when just standing still. With homeopathy, this stopped completely in just 20 days. He also couldn’t tolerate loud sounds or noises, ever since he was a baby, but with regular homeopathy medicines his sound tolerance increased over the years. His irregular sleeping patterns and gastrointestinal disorders have also been resolved with homeopathic treatment. His fears, anxieties, and stage fright all also seemed to disappear with the use of homeopathy. Ayurvedic medicine is working wonderfully for his ADHD and bedwetting challenges. Ayurvedic medicines and brain tonics have also helped to improve his brain functioning, specifically bolstering his logical functioning.
Summing-up
The best part of alternative medicine is that, in my family’s experience, it has no side effects at all. I have read many online posts from worried autism parents about aggressive behavior in their children, and I feel very sad after reading such accounts. As a mother who has seen her child overcome similar issues, I would recommend giving homeopathic treatment a try. Homeopathy is practiced in both the UK and USA as well as in my home country of India. The most important thing is to find an expert. You could even have an online consultation with an expert homeopathic or ayurvedic doctor in India, and the medicines can be sent by courier.
